The main town on the island of Stord, Leirvik gained town status in 1997 despite centuries as Sunnhordland's regional hub, hosting courts, museums and a campus of Western Norway University of Applied Sciences. Its economy runs on the Eldøyane peninsula's Kværner Stord shipyard, which has built everything from offshore oil platforms to cruise ship hulls, and its Old Norse name translates as 'clay bay,' for the ground beneath the harbor.
