Oslo has carried three names across its history: founded as a trading post around 1040, rebuilt as Christiania after a 1624 fire when King Christian IV laid out a new grid beside Akershus Fortress, and restored to its original name only in 1925. Nearly two-thirds of the modern municipality remains forest, hills and lakes, giving the capital a green backdrop for its fjordside Opera House and the sculpture-filled Frogner Park.
