Founded around 1070 and built across a cluster of surrounding peaks nicknamed the seven mountains, Bergen became one of the Hanseatic League's four major trading posts, its German merchants controlling the dried-cod trade from Bryggen's wooden wharf houses for roughly 400 years. Most of that UNESCO-listed waterfront actually dates to after a 1702 fire, and today the Fløibanen funicular still hauls visitors up Fløyen for harbor views.
