Set in a river valley on the Bosna, Zenica has been shaped by its ironworks since Austrian industrialists built a steelmaking plant here in 1892, drawn by the area's coal deposits and rail links. The site was already settled in Roman times as Bistua Nova, and hills reaching over 1,300 meters still frame a city whose university and theatre anchor central Bosnia's industrial heartland.
