Founded around 1462 by Ottoman governor Isa-Beg Ishaković, Sarajevo grew into a trading hub centered on the Baščaršija bazaar, still anchored by the 1531 Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque and the 1753 Sebilj fountain. Austro-Hungarian rule after 1878 added grand boulevards alongside the Ottoman quarter, and the 1984 Winter Olympics later put the mountain-ringed capital on the world stage.
