The Stari Most has arched over the emerald Neretva River since 1566, when Ottoman architect Mimar Hayruddin completed a nine-year build commissioned by Suleiman the Magnificent. Shelled down in 1993, it was rebuilt stone for stone by 2004 and earned UNESCO World Heritage status the following year. Mostar's own name honors the mostari, the bridge keepers who guarded the crossing, and goldsmiths still work the Kujundžiluk bazaar beside it.
