Tešanj's hilltop fortress predates the Romans, who expanded it, as did the Slavs and Ottomans after them, and in 1697 it was the one stronghold in the region to hold out against the invading army of Eugene of Savoy. Below its walls, the town built a reputation for metalworking that continues today in a modern economy built on metal processing, textiles, and food production.
