First mentioned in 1107, Varde holds the oldest town coat of arms in Denmark, a golden leopard granted long before it received market privileges in 1442. Its red-brick 'Varde classicism' architecture lines the streets around the 12th-century Church of Sct Jacob, but the surrounding municipality now ranks as Denmark's largest coastal tourism area, stretching from inland heath to the North Sea beaches of Blåvand and the Wadden Sea.
