Odense has been an important settlement since the Viking Age, growing around the 10th-century Nonnebakken ring fortress before becoming a bishopric by the 11th century and, eventually, Denmark's third-largest city. It's the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, whose childhood streets and fairy-tale gardens still charm visitors, while St. Canute's Cathedral holds the remains of the murdered king Canute IV, canonised as Denmark's patron saint.
