Straddling the Alssund strait on the island of Als, Sønderborg spent more than five decades under German rule after the 1864 Second Schleswig War. When a 1920 plebiscite restored the region to Denmark, the town was split — a narrow majority of its residents voted to stay German. Its waterfront castle now houses a regional history museum, and the engineering firm Danfoss, headquartered nearby in Nordborg, anchors the economy today.
