Christianity arrived in Denmark in 980, and for centuries Roskilde was the seat of the Danish crown — its twin-spired cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, holds the tombs of 39 kings and queens. On the fjord, the Viking Ship Museum displays five 10th-century vessels raised from the water in 1962, having been sunk to block the harbour centuries earlier. Each July the city hosts Northern Europe's biggest rock festival.
