Koldinghus, a royal castle begun in the 13th century where a young crown prince grew up, watched over Kolding's rise as a medieval trading post for fish and textiles on the Kolding Fjord, first recorded in 1231. A fire gutted the castle in 1808, and its restored halls now hold a museum of furniture and church art, while Kolding's design museum, Trapholt, carries that craft tradition forward.
