First documented in 1274 at a fording point on the Storå stream — its name means 'resting place by the bridge' — Holstebro later recorded what was for decades Denmark's highest-ever temperature, 36.4°C, in 1975, and survived the country's most destructive tornado in 1962. Its pedestrianised centre doubles as an open-air sculpture park, launched in 1966 with a purchase of Alberto Giacometti's work, and the town remains home to the experimental Odin Teatret.
