Formed in 1842 from the merger of three small parishes, Gentofte has grown into Denmark's wealthiest municipality, its lakeside villas and grand avenues stretching from Hellerup to Charlottenlund. The Ordrupgaard museum houses one of the country's finest collections of French Impressionist painting, while Arne Jacobsen's curved Bellavista apartments line the Øresund coast. Future Norwegian king Haakon VII and Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich both count Gentofte as their birthplace.
