King Frederick III founded Fredericia in 1650, laying out a star-shaped fortress on a peninsula jutting into the Little Belt to shield Jutland after the Thirty Years' War. Its earthen ramparts and gates ring the old town, and every July 6th the city commemorates an 1849 battlefield victory. Today Fredericia is better known as a major railway junction and, with neighbours Kolding and Vejle, part of Denmark's industrial Triangle Region.
