Konjic has been inhabited for some 4,000 years and was first named in a Republic of Ragusa document dated 16 June 1382. Its six-arched Ottoman bridge, built in the early 1680s, still crosses the Neretva, among the coldest rivers in the world, near Boračko Lake. Deep in a nearby mountain, Yugoslav authorities secretly built an atomic command bunker between 1953 and 1979.
