Banja Luka, the largest city in Republika Srpska, grew up around the Kastel fortress on the Vrbas River, a stronghold with roots in a Roman-era outpost that Ottoman governor Ferhad Pasha Sokolović rebuilt into a walled citadel in the late 1500s. Its name was first recorded in a 1494 royal charter, and tree-lined boulevards and riverside cafés define its center today.
