Tuzla takes its name from the Ottoman Turkish word for salt, and the deposits beneath it have been mined since Neolithic times — the settlement was recorded as 'Salines' by a Byzantine emperor as early as 950. Decades of extraction eventually destabilized the ground, and the resulting subsidence was reshaped into the Pannonica salt lakes, a park unique in Europe for having lakes of salt water at its center.
