Across the Sava River from Gradiška lies the Croatian town of Stara Gradiška, a stretch of water that once marked the military frontier between the Habsburg and Ottoman empires. The Ottomans built a fortress here, known as Berbir, to guard that boundary, and the crossing it once defended is today the main road link between Bosnia and Croatia at this stretch of the border.
