German bombing in 1940 leveled most of Bodø, so the rebuilt city north of the Arctic Circle is now known for different landmarks: nearby Saltstraumen, where tidal water speeds reach 22 knots through a narrow strait, ranking it among the world's strongest maelstroms, and its role as the main gateway to the Lofoten Islands. Bodø was named a European Capital of Culture for 2024, capping a Cold War military history.
