Stavanger's fortunes have twice been remade by what came out of the water: 19th-century herring shoals built a sardine-canning industry still explained at the Norwegian Canning Museum, and North Sea oil discovered in 1969 turned the city into 'Oljebyen,' headquarters to energy giant Equinor. Between the two eras, Gamle Stavanger's cobbled lanes of white 18th-century wooden houses survived intact, and the city remains the main gateway to Lysefjord's Preikestolen cliff.
