Alvar Aalto grew up in Jyväskylä and later returned to design more buildings here than in any other Finnish city, including much of the university campus that still shapes the townscape. Set on the shore of Lake Jyväsjärvi in the heart of the lake district, the city built Finland's first Finnish-language teacher training college in the 19th century and remains one of the country's largest student towns.
