Oulu built its early wealth on tar, shipping barrels of pine tar down the Oulujoki River to become, by the 19th century, one of the world's largest tar-exporting ports. That trading fortune later funded the grand merchant houses still visible downtown. Today the city has reinvented itself as a wireless-technology research hub around its university, while its market square policeman statue, Toripolliisi, remains a favorite local meeting point.
