When Communist planners decided in 1964 to expand coal mining beneath Most's medieval centre, they demolished nearly everything, including a 1470s brewery and a 19th-century theatre, but chose to save one Gothic church. In 1975, the entire 12,000-tonne Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was inched 841 metres along rails to safety over 28 days, a feat still listed among the world's heaviest building relocations.
