Coal and steel built Ostrava into the industrial heart of Czechia, and the Vítkovice Ironworks, founded in 1828 and later run by the Rothschild family, once completed the entire iron-making process at a single site. Since production stopped in 1998, the towering blast furnaces of Lower Vítkovice have been reborn as galleries, concert venues, and a symbol of the city's reinvention rather than demolished.
