King Ottokar II founded Uherské Hradiště in 1257 to protect the nearby monastery at Velehrad, choosing river islands that Great Moravian communities had already settled centuries before the Czech state existed. Today it anchors the Slovácko region, prized for its folk costumes, music, and wine, and its Jesuit-era Church of St. Francis Xavier, completed in 1685, still overlooks the left bank of the Morava River.
