Granted brewing rights in 1307, Plzeň became world-famous in 1842 when brewmaster Josef Groll produced the first golden Pilsner lager at what is now Pilsner Urquell, a style since copied by brewers everywhere. Beyond the brewery's cool underground cellars, the city centers on a broad Gothic square dominated by the soaring spire of St. Bartholomew's Cathedral, one of the tallest in Bohemia.
