Hatmaking built Nový Jičín's fortunes, a trade that began in 1630 and turned industrial in 1865, eventually producing one of the world's oldest hat factories and, after 1945, the TONAK company, still among the world's largest headwear makers. Its Renaissance-Baroque arcaded square is watched over by a 66-metre church tower dating to 1587, and Austrian field marshal Ernst Gideon von Laudon is buried in the parish church.
