Formed in 1910 when six rival towns (Hanley, Burslem, Stoke-upon-Trent, Longton, Tunstall, and Fenton) federated into one city, Stoke-on-Trent has been known as 'the Potteries' since the 17th century, when local clay and coal built an industry that produced Wedgwood, Spode, and Royal Doulton china. Novelist Arnold Bennett fictionalized the towns as his 'Five Towns,' and bottle-shaped kilns still mark the skyline.
