Kungälv grew in the shadow of Bohus Fortress, a medieval stronghold begun in 1308 on a cliff at the point where the Göta älv splits into the Nordre älv, enclosing the island of Hisingen. For centuries the fortress changed hands between Sweden, Norway, and Denmark, and its ruins still overlook the town.
