Founded in 1680 as a purpose-built base for the Swedish navy, Karlskrona was laid out on a cluster of islands in the Blekinge archipelago with a grid of naval yards, fortifications, and civic buildings. It remains Sweden's only naval UNESCO World Heritage Site and is still home to the Swedish navy's main base.
