Râmnicu Vâlcea sits where the Olt River cuts through the Carpathians, close to the fortified Cozia Monastery, founded by Prince Mircea the Elder in the late 1300s. The city grew into a major chemical-industry center in the 20th century around the Oltchim petrochemical plant on the riverbank, one of the largest of its kind in the country.
