A castle founded in the 10th century by Prince Boleslav the Pious gave Mladá Boleslav its start, but the town's modern identity was forged in 1895 when bicycle makers Václav Laurin and Václav Klement began the company that would become Škoda, building its first automobile here in 1905. Their factory transformed a quiet regional centre into one of Central Europe's most important car-manufacturing cities.
