Built up around the water castle of the Ronovci noble family, Česká Lípa takes its name from the lime trees once common along its trade routes, its first town charter following soon after 1310. Count Albrecht von Wallenstein founded an Augustinian monastery here in 1627, and the surrounding sandstone country, dotted with rock towers and ravines, opens northeast toward the landscapes of the Bohemian Paradise.
