Josip Jelačić, the Croatian ban who led forces against Hungary in 1848, made his home at Novi Dvori, a manor built in 1611 just outside Zaprešić that his family later bequeathed to the state in 1934. The town's rail station was also the site of deadly 1903 protests against Hungarian rule, a reminder that this now-booming Zagreb commuter town has its own history of resistance.
