Sherbrooke rose at the meeting point of the Magog and Saint-François rivers, where Gilbert Hyatt built a flour mill and sawmill in 1801. The city took its name in 1818, honouring governor general Sir John Coape Sherbrooke, and its waterfalls later powered textile mills and pulp and paper plants that made it the 'Queen of the Eastern Townships.' Bishop's University and the 19th-century Saint Michael Basilica-Cathedral anchor its cultural life.
