Capital of the sandy Campine region in Antwerp province, Turnhout built an unlikely global specialism in printing playing cards, a trade that took off with steam-powered presses during the Industrial Revolution and made the city the sole manufacturer of playing cards in the Low Countries for much of the twentieth century. That heritage is preserved today at the National Playing Card Museum, housed in a former card factory.
