Rising above the Baltic Sea, Tallinn's Old Town has been continuously inhabited since Danish crusaders fortified the hill of Toompea in 1219. Once a wealthy Hanseatic League trading post ruled in turn by Danish, German, Swedish, and Russian powers, its cobbled streets, watchtowers, and 14th-century Gothic Town Hall — among the oldest in Europe — earned the district UNESCO World Heritage status in 1997.
