Bathing guests first came to Pärnu's shores in 1837, and by the 1890s the town — then known as Pernau — had become imperial Russia's fashionable seaside cure, complete with the grand 1891 Kursaal pavilion and a landscaped Coastal Park. Nicknamed Estonia's summer capital, it still draws crowds each July to its five-kilometre sand beach and the grand 1937 Rannahotell, a landmark of the town's resort heyday.
