Nicknamed Solstaden, the 'Sun City,' for its unusually sunny climate, Karlstad sits where the Klarälven river meets Lake Vänern, Sweden's largest lake, and hosts one of the country's biggest inland lake harbors. A catastrophic fire in 1865 destroyed all but a handful of buildings, and the city was rebuilt with the wide, tree-lined boulevards still visible today.
