Alexandria was laid out from scratch in 1834 on the orders of Wallachian prince Alexandru Ghica, who gave the new grain-trading town on the Vedea River his own name. Its grid-planned streets, drawn up by an Austrian engineer, still set it apart from Romania's older, organically grown county towns.
