A hot air balloon crashed into Tullamore on May 10, 1785, sparking a fire that destroyed roughly 130 houses in what is often called the world's first aviation disaster; the town still marks the event with a phoenix on its coat of arms. The Grand Canal reached Tullamore in 1798, and the whiskey distilled here since 1829, Tullamore D.E.W., returned to local production in 2014.
