A 20th-century coal-mining city in the hills west of Budapest, Tatabánya is watched over by Europe's largest bird statue: an 8-metre bronze Turul with a nearly 15-metre wingspan, erected on Kő-hegy hill in 1907 to mark the Hungarian Millennium. Mining shaped the city's identity long after the pits closed.
