The port of Le Havre gave Impressionism its name: Claude Monet, who grew up here, painted the harbor at dawn in 1872 and titled the canvas simply 'Impression, Sunrise.' The city Monet knew is largely gone; leveled in 1944, it was rebuilt in modernist concrete by architect Auguste Perret, work so distinctive that UNESCO listed the whole center as a World Heritage site in 2005.
