East of Tallinn, Maardu grew up around one of Soviet Estonia's largest phosphorite mines, opened in 1940 and shut down in 1991 after environmental protests remembered as the Phosphorite War, an early spark of Estonia's independence movement. Today the town is better known for the Port of Muuga, Estonia's largest cargo harbour, while the reservoir of Lake Maardu, created in 1939 for the chemical plant, still borders its eastern edge.
