Though a bishop's castle stood here in the 15th century, the modern town dates to 1845, when the Drewsen brothers built a paper mill on the Gudenå River — the mill later supplied paper for Danish banknotes until 1992. Surrounded by lakes and Denmark's largest forest, Silkeborg is now known as the country's outdoor capital, and its museum displays the well-preserved Iron Age bog body known as the Tollund Man.
