Known as Fladstrand until King Frederik VI granted it market town status and a new name in 1818, Frederikshavn traces its harbour settlement back to 1572. Its 1688 gunpowder tower was moved 270 metres in 1976 to make way for shipyard expansion, and ferries sail daily to Gothenburg and Oslo from what remains one of Denmark's busiest fishing ports — so renowned that its plaice has its own name, 'frederikshavner.'
