Wedged between Lake Furesø and Lake Sjælsø amid several forests, Birkerød stayed a rural crossroads until the Nordbanen railway reached it in 1868, sparking a wave of brickyards and, later, suburban housing. It remained its own municipality until a 2007 reform folded it into Rudersdal, and today it's known for Birkerød Gymnasium, the country's largest public school offering the International Baccalaureate, just a 20-minute S-train ride from central Copenhagen.
