Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe named this spot on the forks of the Thames River after London, England, in 1793, though settlement only began decades later around a military garrison. The city that grew up around Western University and the Labatt Brewing Company, founded here in 1847, has since become a regional hub for healthcare and finance. In 2021, London was designated Canada's first UNESCO City of Music.
