Iron ore drew industry to Ternitz after 1842, when the Südbahn railway reached the lower Schwarza valley; a hammer mill founded here in 1846 grew within twenty years into the Ternitzer Eisen- und Stahlwerke under financier Alexander von Schoeller. That firm later became Schoeller-Bleckmann, a name still tied to specialty steel today. Ternitz sits where the Sierning stream joins the Schwarza River in the Lower Austrian Alps.
